In May 1993, the High Energy Physics Group of Shandong University realized its Internet access via leased line. Subsequently, the system of dialing up to the LAN was built. There were about 20 users on campuses at that time.

In June 1995, Shandong University started the campus network construction. A steering group headed then by Academician Pan Chengdong was set up and the construction plan was approved in December 1995.

Shandong University campus network cover six campuses and consists of two main campus networks respectively in Jinan and Weihai. The network adopts the structure of three layers: core layer, distribution layer and access layer, and forms into a uniform network platform. The network backbone accesses to CERNET(China Education and Research Network) by using a high quality gigabit Router, 8 layer3 core gigabit Ethernet switches and more than 100 layer3 edge switches. By the end of 2002, the access rate to CERNET has reached up to 1Gbps. There are more than 11,000 student dormitories accessing points and 7,000 users hooked up with the LAN. In total, there are about 17,000 computers connected to CERNET on the campuses.

Shandong University has been taking active role in the construction of the online information and service. We have the high capability email system and data center (IDC) which provide versatile services, such as the virtual host, host trusteeship, application service and so on. Also equipped are the VOD systems and the digital library. For user's convenience, we also provide access services over the Wireless Network.
