Shandong University (SDU) was founded in 1901 in Shandong Province, the birthplace of Confucius. With 100 years of development, SDU has developed into a comprehensive university with courses covering ten fields, namely: literature, history, philosophy, science, engineering, medicine, economics, law, management and education. Known for its academic excellence and diverse life on campus, SDU attracts top students from across China and from about 30 countries.

President¡¯s Message Welcome
to Shandong University¡¯s web home. As you look around, you will
find that Shandong University is the flagship of the Institutions
of higher learning in Shandong and university of academic excellence
in China. Our mission include offering high quality educational
programs, preparing graduates who are ready to meet both academic
and social challenges, conducting research work of national and
international standing and to provide excellent service for communities.
You will also find that
the year 2001 is our centennial, a significant milestone in the
history of any institution. As we review our achievements and success
in the past 100 year, we also look to the future and are committed
to the discovery, dissemination, and application of knowledge with
greater enthusiasm and investment of resources. You are welcome to explore

Zhan Tao, Ph.D. President Email: president@sdu.edu Curriculum Vitae Born in April 1963 in Yanzhou,
Shandong Province, Dr. Zhan Tao entered Shandong University in 1979,
majoring in Mathematics, and received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degree
in the same school. After his Ph.D. training in 1987, he began to
work as a faculty member in the Department of Mathematics of Shandong
University. From 1991, funded by The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation,
he was a visiting scientist in Freiburg University, Germany for
two years. In 1993, he was promoted as professor of Mathematics
and Deputy Dean of the Department of Mathematics of Shandong University.
Since 1995, he served as Vice President of Shandong University.
From October to November 1999, Dr. Zhan, worked in Australia as
the Acting Vice President of Maqurie University on a Shadowing Program.
On July 22, 2000, the former Shandong University, Shandong Medical
University and Shandong University of Technology merged into a new
Shandong University. Dr. Zhan Tao was appointed as president of
Shandong University. Dr. Zhan Tao has been long
engaged in studying on several famous questions in the field of
Number Theory. His achievements have drawn much attention and high
appreciation, both in domestic and overseas fraternities. Because
of his academic achievements, he was given the title "Chinese
Ph.D. with Outstanding Contribution" by the Degree Committee
of the State Council, one of the experts of China's "First
Hundred Talents Project" and expert of the "Cross Century
Talents Plan" by the Ministry of Education. In 1993 he became
one of the youngest doctorate program supervisors in China. At present,
he takes the offices of Standing Director of Chinese Mathematics
Association, Chairman of Shandong Mathematics Association, Editor
of Mathematics Journal
(English Version), Standing Member of the State Youth Council and
Standing Member of Shandong Provincial Scientific Association. Present leaders: Zhan Tao, President, Professor &

Research Fellow In 1984, with the approval from the Ministry of Education, Shandong
University set up a branch in Weihai, a scenic coastal city located
in eastern part of Shandong Province. The campus covers an area
of 120 hectares. About 2000 students study in eight departments
