The Institute of Modern American Literature, founded in 1963, is the first research institution specialized in American literature in China. In 1978 it began to enroll students for master's degrees. The institute is rich in reference books and materials. The major subjects of research are as follows: History of American Literature, 19th and 20th American Literature, American Fiction, American Drama, Shakespeare's Works, Foreign Literary Theory and Criticism, and American Poetry.
The Institute of Applied Electronic Techniques, established in 1988, is a comprehensive entity combining research, development, production and trade. It consists of an Electroencephalo Information Research Center and a Sino- foreign joint corporation.
The major research fields are: Automation of Industrial Production; Intelligence Instruments; Medical Electronics and Automobile Electronics. Since the foundation of the institute, 15 research achievements have been made. Among them, the Near-sighted Eyes Treating Apparatus won an international prize. The brain disease treating apparatus depending on feedback of the electroencephalo information has been produced with the Japanese investment and obtained its patent in Japan.
The ECIWO (embryo containing the information of the whole organism ) Biology is a new subject that studies the life phenomena of ECIWO. An ECIWO is a special embryo at a certain stage of development, and is a component of an organism. An organism consists of multilevel ECIWOs. ECIWO Biology is of great value for medicine and agriculture. Major research fields are: ECIWO Biology, ECIWO Medicine and ECIWO Medical Instruments. The director of the institute is Prof. Zhang Yingqing, who is the founder of ECIWO Biology and the ECIWO theory. Four conferences of ECIWO Biology focused on Zhang's theory and discoveries have already been held in China. Two international conferences on ECIWO Biology have been held in Singapore (1990), Oslo and Norway (1992). Zhang's ECIWO diagnosis and therapy have been applied in treating 1,000,000 cases with more than 200 kinds of diseases. The average effect rate is more than 90%. In addition to research activities, the institute also produces serial medical ECIWO instruments for diagnoses and treatment, which have been well sold in many countries of Europe, America and Asia. The International Society of ECIWO Biology is headquartered right in this institute. Prof. Zhang is the lifelong director of the ECIWO Society.

The Zhouyi Research Center, founded in 1987, is a specific academic institution studying Zhouyi. Headed by Liu Dajun, a world reputed Zhouyi expert, the center is a combination of teaching and research. The periodical Zhouyi Studies has been issued among 28 countries and regions. The study on Xiangshu(the eight diagrams in Book of Changes) and the Zhouyi Scripture is the best in China. Other agencies such as China's Zhouyi Society, International Youth Zhouyi Society, and Shandong Zhouyi Association are all subordinate to the center. The Zhouyi correspondence schools in the United States and Canada are all sponsored by this center.
The initial studies of crystal materials in SU started in early 1958, and the Institute of Crystal Materials was established in 1978. The Institute now is the key national laboratory of Crystal Materials, and acts as an important base for the research and development of Crystal Materials in China. The Institute offers master's degrees in Inorganic Non-metallic Materials, Solid State Physics, and doctoral degrees in Solid State Physics, and has a post-doctoral mobile station for Solid State Physics.
The current research in this institute is mainly concentrated on the growth of functional crystal materials and their application, the exploration of new functional crystal materials, the preparation and research of low-dimensional crystal materials, the studies of physical properties of crystals, the design and production of functional crystal devices, as well as the studies of basic processes and fundamental theories of crystal growth.
