Brief Introduction of Provincial Key Laboratory
The Laboratory of Developmental Mechanism and Gene Regulation (DMGR) is the University Key Laboratory. It develops from the base of the laboratory of Developmental Biology founded by Prof. Tong Dichou, the world-famous experimental embryologist, who had high reputation in the research of developmental biology at home and abroad these 60 years. This laboratory is listed in Key Laboratory in Shandong Academic School in 1997.

There are 18 staffs including 4 professors, 4 associate professors, 8 lecturers and 2 technical personnels. Prof. Zhang Hongwei is General Director of the laboratory and Prof. Wu Zuze, who is the Member of National Academy, Chairman of the Laboratory Academic Committee.

In the laboratory, there are two research groups: Animal developmental mechanism and gene regulation, Plant developmental mechanism and genetic engineering and some other related groups.

Master degree of Science and Doctor degree of Science can be awarded and the post doctoral research program can be offered in this laboratory. About 10-- 15 graduates and visiting scholars are enrolled annually .

Objectives of the Laboratory
  1. To study the Animal developmental mechanism, the structure, function: concerning gene and the regulation among the genes. To provide scientific basis for further interpretation about the expression of developmental-related gene on the level of DNA in lives, and the regulation model among development differentiation, apotosis and aging of the tissue, morpha and structure.

  2. To study developmental mechanism of cell and genetic engineering of plant, try to make great progress in the field of the developmental mechanism of the plant organs and embryos as well as and the genetic engineering technology of stress-resistance, high-production crops. Contribute to the formation and development of new biotechnical agriculture in the future.

  3. To train advanced technical personnels for our nation. To prompt the development of education and research of developmental biology in China.

  4. To enhance the academic exchanging and research cooperation between China and other countries through the opening of the laboratory.

Research Activity of the Laboratory
  1. On the level of cell and molecule to study the related mechanism of individual development and system embryology of immunosystem of animals including mankind.

  2. The origin and differentiation of T cell and B cell, and the expression and regulation of the SIg and MHC gene.

  3. The origin and development of microprotein bata-2 and immuno-related gene such as complement in low class animals. The clone and expressive model of the hedgehog gene, whose product is a molecule to deliver signals in differentiation mechanism of nerve and early embryo development.

  4. The developmental mechanism of early embryo and stem-cell ; the differentiation and oncogenesis of the T cell; the function of the oncogene in embryo development and cell apotosis mechanism.

  5. The induce, integration and expression of exogenous gene in plant genetic engineering. The theory and application of the genetic stability and unanimously of gene receptor system and exogenous gene.

  6. The identification and molecular work of exogenous chromosome and related genome in wheat; the gene transformation of wheat; the fertility of hybrid plant; the research on differentiation complementation of hybrid body- cells among genus of wheat. The research on related differentiation mechanism of organ and somatic embryo development in the cultivation of plant tissue.

Facilities and Open Research Subject of the Laboratory
There are work rooms of 446m2 in this laboratory. The main instruments and equipment can satisfied the research work of cellbiology and molecular biology. The recent research of preferential support are as follows:

  1. The clone of animal development related gene and the identification of its expressive product.
  2. The research of mechanism of animal's early embryo development.
  3. The differentiation regulation and oncogensis of lymph cell.
  4. The somatic hybridization between wheat and intergenenic grasses.
  5. Gene engineering of resistance to BYDV for wheat.
  6. Research on organ and embyro development of plant tissue and its differentiation mechanism.
