State Key Laboratory of Microbial Technology

Brief Introduction of State Key
The State Key Laboratory of Microbial Technology (SKLMT) was formally established at Shandong University in November, 1995. The laboratory was funded (1.2 million U.S. dollars and 3.6 million RMB) by Chinese Government and World Bank as part of the China Key Studies Development Project.

The laboratory has 28 faculties and stuff, including 8 professors, 10 associate professors, 5 lecturers and 5 technicians. The Director of the laboratory is Prof. Qu Yinbo, Deputy director is Asoc. Prof. Chen Guanjun. Chairman of the Laboratory Academic Committee is Prof. Yu Juntang (from East China University of Science and Technology in Shanghai).

There are four research groups in the laboratory: Biomass Resource Group, Bioprocess Technology Group, Bioproduct Development Group and Molecular Biotechnology Group. The laboratory has also an administration office, a computer room and an analysis group.

Master degree of Science (Microbiology), Doctor degree of Science (Microbiology) and Master degree of Fermentation Engineering (Technology) can be offered in this laboratory, and postdoctoral research program can be offered too. About 15- 20 graduates and visiting scholars can be enrollment annually.

Since the establishment of the SKLMT in 1991, more than 200 papers have been published in international or domestic journals and conferences. 3 Chinese patents have been registered. 16 prices were awarded to the lad by Chinese or province government. 12 of the achievements have been applied to industry.

Objectives of the Laboratory
  1. To screening or construct new microbial strains with various special functions by the means of modern biotechnology such as genetic engineering and metabolic engineering.

  2. To study the metabolic activities of microorganisms, and develope new microbial process and new bio-products. Special emphasis is laid on the exploitation of natural resources and the protection of ecological environment by new microbial processes or products for the sustainable development of human society.

  3. To train higher level technical personnel for the development of teaching and research of microbial technology in China.

  4. To enhance the academic exchanging and research cooperation with other institutes in China and abroad in the field of biotechmolohy by the opening of the laboratory.

Research activities of the Laboratory
  1. Bio-energy and chemicals from waste biomass. Production of ethanol, organic solvents, fodder, methane and other chemicals from ligno-cellulosic resource and other organic wastes by microbial technology; production of feed additives or hydrogen (as energy source) by photosynthetic bacteria; anaerobic digestion of waste water; bioprocess development for both energy-saving and high productivity.

  2. Environmental biotechnology and material resource exploitation. New products or processes for protection of ecosystem, such as bio-insecticide, biodegradable plastics, bacterial desulfurization techniques and biopulping techniques; the exploitation of mineral resource by microbial technology; such as enhanced oil recovery by microorganisms or bioproducts, bacterial leaching.
  3. Fermentation products and processes development. New type of enzyme preparations, functional foods, physiological active compounds, biocides or biostatics, biopolymers et. al.

  4. Recombinant strains with special function. Construction of engineered strains such as the bioleaching strains of autotrophic thiobacillus with arsenic resistant ability, the industrial strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae with killer activity, high expression gene transfer of filamentous fungi by means of genetic engineering or metabolic engineering.

  5. Optimization and control of fermentation process. Fed-batch cultivation, continuous fermentation, immobilized microbial cell culture, high cell density culture, optimization and control of bioprocess by computer, coupled fermentation and separation techniques, bioreator design and bioseparation technology.

Facilities of the Laboratory
There are 4000 m3 rooms in the SKLMT. The main instruments and equipment include: 6 sets of 2 to 50 L fermentors, an UV-3100 UV-VIS-NIR spectrophotometer, an HPLC analysis/preparation system, a GC/LC/MS system, an amino acid analyzer, two ultracentrifuges, a freeze dryer, a high-speed ball- mill et. al.

Open Research Subjects of the Laboratory
In the major research fields of the SKLMT, the researchers outside of the laboratory are welcome to work or study in the laboratory. The projects to be dormanitely supported belong in following subjects are for application:

  1. Bioconversion technology of industrial or agricultural wastes.
  2. Construction of engineered strains having potential application.
  3. New fermentation products.
  4. Fermentation process optimization and control.
  5. Immobilization of cells or enzymes to yield fine chemicals and pharmaceutical products.
