The department has a post-doctoral mobile station in Developmental Biology, and offers doctoral degrees in Developmental Biology.

The Biochemistry speciality has two fields: Molecular Biology and Biochemical Pharmacy. Main courses for the undergraduate program are: Molecular Biology, Protein Chemistry, Nucleic Acid Chemistry, Enzymology and Enzyme Engineering, High Experiments of Biochemistry, Principles of Biochemical Technology, Molecular Immunology, Principles of Chemical Technology; Food Chemistry, Fermentation Engineering, Biochemical Pharmacy, Biochemical Test, Biotechnology, etc.

In recent years, with the technology of Plant Cell Engineering and Genetic Engineering, the department has made considerable achievements in breeding new varieties of crops, in the research on differentiation of lymphocyte, prevention of vegetation in temperate and warm zones, in the prevention and control of rat plague and prawn virus, and in the development of new medicines, etc. The achievements in these areas have reached the most advanced national and international levels. In the past five years, the department has won a second-class national prize in natural science and over 10 scientific and technological progress awards at the provincial or ministerial levels.

This department is one of the major teaching and research centers for microbiology in China. It provides doctoral degrees, has laboratories for the post-doctoral scholars and owns the key national Fermentation Engineering Laboratory.

Two specialties are offered in this department: Microbiology and Microbiol Engineering. The Microbiology speciality is basically involved in research activities and offers 4 areas of specialization: Microbiology, Medical Microbiology and Immunology, Food and Hygienic Examination and Molecular Biology. The Microbiological Engineering speciality is mainly concerned with the relevant application and provides 4 areas of specialization: Fermentation Engineering, Food and Biochemical Engineering, Environmental Protective Engineering and Gene Engineering. These two specialties are independent and complementary to each other.

The main research fields of the department focus on: Microbial Degradation of Cellulose and Lignin, Gene Engineering of Autotrophic Bacteria, Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery, Cultivation of Photosynthetic Bacteria, Feed and its Additives, Breeding of large Fungi, Removal of Gossypol, etc.. The achievements in the Department have shown very promising future.
