The Department of Optoelectronics and Information Engineering

A Brief Introduction to the Department
The Department of Optoelectronics and Information Engineering was established in 1970.

It educates and trains students in the areas of optoelectronic technology and information processing which are urgently needed in the market economy and the scientific research. After development through 27 years, the department has built up an integrated teaching system, including two specialties for undergraduates, two specialties in the Master's Degree Programme and one specialty for candidates for a doctorate.

The scientific researches in the department involve the following fields: infrared physics and devices, interaction between lasers, ion beams and materials, laser physics and nonlinear optics, optoelectronic technology, optical information processing etc.

The department has about 70 teaching and administrative staffs, 4 teaching and research sections, 5 laboratories, the computer laboratory and the department library. The department plans to enroll 80 new undergraduates, 10 new graduate students for a Master's Degree and 4 new raduate students for a doctorate in the year 1998.

Specialties Offered by the Department
The Department offers the following specialties:
  1. optoelectronic technology
  2. applied optics
  3. military optics
  4. physical electronics and photoeletronics.
It is worth mentioning here that the military optics listed above has been classified by the provincial government as the key specialty. Specialty 1 and 2 are set up for undergraduates. The major courses in specialty 1 are optical fibre communication, laser technology, infrared technology, photoelectric technology etc. The major courses in specialty 2 are information optics, laser engineering etc. The department devotes much attention to the teaching and experimental work in basic courses such as physics, mathematics, computer, foreign language etc. It also provides some specialized courses which are not only up-to-date but also practical. Specialty 3 is set up for graduate students both for a Master's Degree and for a doctorate. Specialty 4 is set up for graduate students only for a Master's Degree.

Students in the Department
The department has 268 undergraduates including 60 seniors, 60 juniors, 76 sophomores and 72 freshmen. They come from 14 different provinces, cities and autonomous regions of China.

The department also has 20 graduate students for a Master's Degree and 5 graduate students for a doctorate.

The department has 2 Ph.D.supervisors, 10 professors and 29 associate professors.

Key laboratory, Institute, Research Center ( Teaching and Research Section, Laboratory)
Under the department there are the following units: The department possesses the teaching and research instruments originally worth over 6.5 million yuan. Some of them are the precision instruments imported from the United States, Germany, France and Japan. The department library has a large collection of over 16000 books and 7600 periodicals of 95 kinds either in Chinese or in foreign language. The computers in the department, as well as the instruments, the books and the periodicals mentioned above, can very well meet the needs for teaching work not only for undergraduates but also for graduate students.

Achievements of Researches
In the department 33 items of scientific researches have been rewarded respectively by the state, ministry, province, city, or university. Among them "Research of the Ligand Field Theory", "Research of the Command Instrument of the Antiaircraft Gun" etc. won the national science conference award. From 1986 to 1993, 12 academic books have been published, 426 research papers have been published in numbers of periodicals at home and abroad, among them 72 papers are carried by foreign periodicals, 176 papers by national periodicals. In the recent years, the name of the department is occupying front places on the list, issued by the University, of the number of academic papers specially extracted by SCI and EI.

Cooperation and Exchange
In the past, about 20 teachers, sent by the department, went to the United States, Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Japan, Australia etc. for advanced studies and cooperative researches. Now about 10 young teachers are still studying abroad for a doctorate or a post doctorate.

The department has held many national academic conferences, e.g. the Second National Symposium of Laser Physics.

The department and the Saint Babara Branch of California University of USA have a joint education program for Chinese doctoral students.
