Grant school-opening ceremony held for freshmen

With the national anthem in chorus echoing in Shangdong Stadium, the first school-opening ceremony for freshmen after the founding of the new Shandong University (SDU) began at 9 o’clock on September 12. The stadium was permeated with a warm atmosphere of jubilation.

The new SDU founded on July 22 is a merger of three Jinan-based institutions of higher learning including former Shandong University, Shandong Medical University and Shandong University of Technology. It is under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Education and the joint construction and administration Shandong Province.

Chairman of Shandong University Council Zhu Zhengchang, President Zhan Tao, accompanied by the other school leaders attended the ceremony.

Vice-President Xu Xianming presided over the ceremony.

President Zhan started his speech by extending a warm welcome to nearly 10,000 freshmen, who were all in military uniform because they are taking 20-day military training. They entered SDU in September in the wake of their success in the college entrance examination.

After briefing the situation of new SDU, Zhan said that the fundamental task of an institute of higher learning is to produce talents.

“Confronted with the historic opportunity and severe challenge of knowledge economy in the 21th century, we must meet the requirement of fierce competition of talents to build SDU into a base of training higher talents,” Zhan said.

He expressed his hope that all students would give an equal emphasis to academic performance and moral awareness in conclusion.

Ai Xing, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and professor at Machinery Engineering School of SDU, said in his speech that far from self-appointed, a top-rate university depends on the positive social influence of generations of students, adding that the students present should grasp the opportunity and redouble their efforts to become talents.

Zhu: Unite as one to strive for a top-rate university

Zhu Zhengchang, Chairman of SDU Council, called on all staff and administrators to unite as one to turn SDU into a top-rate university.

“We strive to build SDU into a top-rate university to recreate its glory, which is the need of implementing the strategy of invigorating China and Shandong through science and technology as well as the common wish of all SDUers,” Zhu said.

Zhu made these remarks while extending warm congratulations and best wishes to staff and faculty on September 10, the 15th Teacher’s Day.

Zhu hailed the contribution that all staff made to SDU in founding the new Shandong University.

“A top-rate university doesn’t depend on the extensiveness of its scope, but on its ability to produce first-class talents,” Zhu Zhengchang, Chairman of SDU Council, said while meeting with some freshmen who were top in the college entrance examination. He encouraged the freshmen to continue their efforts to do credit to SDU with new achievement.

Wang Xinnian: a visiting professor

A ceremony was held at SDU on September 21 to engage professor Wang Xinnian, a 38-year-old physicist, as a visiting professor. President Zhan Tao conferred the letter of appointment to Wang.

Professor Chen Huimin awarded

Chen Huimin, professor at Life Science of SDU, was awarded on September 7 in Beijing by China Society of Senior Professor. He was honored for his contribution to the science and education in China.

Open recruitment under way

Administrators are now being recruited at SDU through open examinations. The open recruitment, which began on September 13 and will conclude at the end of this month, aims at selecting administrators from all staff and streamlining the non-teaching group.

A total of 279 people participated in the competition in the selection program, according to the Department of Organization. They are vying for 135 vacancies in the administrative divisions at SDU.

The recruitment gives priority to those who have higher diploma. For example, only doctor tutors and those with doctor degree are qualified to apply for the leading posts in Postgraduates’ Administration, Science and Research Division, Office of the Dean of Studies and Office of Social Science.

Candidate Lu said, “I go in for the selection program in the spirit of competition. An open and fair selection of administrators will surely result in an efficient group.”

Fu Youde, member of the judge panel, said, “To achieve the goal of building SDU into a top-rate university, the immediate task is to organize a first-class administrative group. The selection program won acclaim from the staff.”

Zhu Kaixuan visits SDU

“SDU’s leading body with young people is full of vigor.” Zhu Kaixuan, member of the Standing Committee of National Congress, said when he paid a visit to SDU on September 19.

Zhu, also director of former State Education Commission, was in his inspection tour in Shandong Province.

Zhu said that there are quite a few presidents with math major in comprehensive universities, but no one is as young as President Zhan.

Talking about the new SDU, Zhu said, “The former SDU gave me a deep impression. I had been to former Shandong University of Technology and Shandong Medical University. Both of them have great strength. A comprehensive university should have a medical discipline.” He was optimistic about the future of SDU. President Zhan expressed thanks for Zhu’s visit and briefed him on the situation of SDU.
